First the farm and home of John Eugene DuBignon, it was not long before, with the help of his brother-in-law Newton Finney, DuBignon turned his farm and home into what Munsey’s Magazine called “the richest, most inaccessible club in the world.” Known today as the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District, it’s one of the largest, ongoing restoration projects in the southeastern United States. At its center is the enormous Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Surrounding the hotel are 33 historic buildings from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century which have been turned into mansion-sized cottages, museums, art galleries and bookstores.
