History of Faneuil Hall Marketplace

Built in 1742 by Boston’s wealthiest merchant Peter Faneuil, Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been a prominent marketplace for merchants, fishermen and meat and produce sellers, served as a platform for some of America’s most famous orators and has even played a significant role in history throughout its time. Through its economic ups and downs, the marketplace has withstood the test of time. It has been expanded and restored over the years to accommodate more shoppers and merchants. Quincy Market, North Market and South Market have been added to the original Faneuil Hall Marketplace and remain to this day.

The Sugar Act

Faneuil Hall has seen many great moments throughout its time. In 1764, colonists gathered in Faneuil Hall for the first time to protest against the Sugar Act. During this time the principle, “no taxation without representation” was established and the Sugar Act was eventually repealed in 1766.
