To this day, it is the mission of the Midwest Museum of American Art to “acquire, exhibit and preserve works of art by past and present U.S. visual artists, thus illuminating, inspiring and conserving America’s visual heritage.”

Midwest Museum of American Art Collection

The Midwest Museum of American Art’s collection is comprised of 175 years of 19th and 20th century American Art and includes selections of Abstract Expressionism, American Impressionism, Chicago Imagists, Overbeck Art Pottery, POP Art, Regionalism and the American Scene, the Ash-Can School and Western Art. In all, the art museum’s permanent collection numbers over 3,000 works with at least 600 on view at any time during the year.

Collection Highlights

Abstract Expressionism is supported by Untitled #5 made in 1962 by Hans Hofmann. Examples of American Impressionism within the collection include Bathing in a Stream by Robert Reid, Portrait of Miss Kieps by Thomas Sully and Seacoast by Edward Moran. Chicago Imagists works include Trees of Heaven by Roger Brown and an Untitled piece by Karl Wirsum. A vase crafted by the Overbeck sisters in 1935 supports the Museum’s Overbeck Art Pottery collection. Pop Art highlights include Grasshopper Heaven from the Bottom of My Garden by Andy Warhol, Horsefeathers by Robert Rauschenberg and Alexander Calder’s Pyramids. Examples of Regionalism and the American Scene include Sheaves of Corn by Grant Wood and Summer Morning by Charles Burchfield. Selections from the Ash-Can School include The Gothard made by Arthur Bowen Davies in 1913. Western Art highlights include Indian Encampment by Ralph Albert Blakelock and Indian Tree as well as Red Sky by Jaune Quick-To-See-Smith.

Norman Rockwell

Located on the second floor of the art museum are original oil paintings by Norman Rockwell. Additionally, an extensive collection of hand signed lithographs and collotypes by Rockwell can be found on view and is the largest Norman Rockwell lithograph collection in the state of Indiana.

The R. Douglas & Barbara Grant Family Gallery

Within the R. Douglas and Barbara Grant Family Gallery is the world’s largest public collection of Art pottery. At its center is a Vase with birds and blossoms made by Elizabeth Gray Overbeck and Mary Frances Overbeck. Additionally, the gallery displays Brown County pottery and works by Karl Martz.
