19th Century Holdings

Among the most celebrated works in the Butler Institute of American Art is Winslow Homer’s Snap the Whip, one of the famed tributes to the era of the one-room schoolhouse. A second version of Snap the Whip is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, but slightly differs: Butler’s painting features mountains in the background, while the Metropolitan Museum’s Snap the Whip does not. Additional highlights of the art museum’s 19th century holdings include Roadside Meeting by Albert Pinkham Ryder, After the Hunt by William Michael Harnett and two magnificent portraits by American realist Thomas Eakins.

Hudson River School Painters

Hudson River School painters who pay tribute to beloved American regions are well represented in this Ohio museum. Delight in works of art by Seth Eastman, Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand and Thomas Doughty.

Marine Collection

The Butler Institute of American Art’s Marine Collection spans over four decades. View works by artists such as Fitz Hugh Lane, Martin Johnson, Heade Edward Moran, John Marin and Arthur G. Dove.

American Impressionism

With works such as In Flanders Fields also known as Where Soldiers Sleep and Poppies Grow by Robert Vonnoh, American Impressionism is well represented in the Butler’s permanent collection.  Other examples of American Impressionism include works by Edward Potthast, Theodore Robinson, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt and Gari Melchers.

American Western Collection

The American Western Collection is renowned for its prized works. Showcasing Native American portraits and sensitive canvases depicting Hopi life by Elbridge Ayer Burbank and Oregon Trail, a painting by Albert Bierstadt as its centerpiece, the American Western Collection has become a historical record of the American experience.
