Other than the Incline Railway’s original coal-burning steam engines that were replaced by two 100-horsepower motors in 1911, the railway has not changed much over its more than 100 years of operation. Not only has the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway carried millions of residents and tourists up and down Lookout Mountain over the years, but continues to be one of the area’s most visited tourist attractions seeing hundreds of visitors from around the world each year.

The Incline Railway

Climb through the natural beauty surrounding historic Lookout Mountain and enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys from the observation windows on the passenger rail. Climbing at a breathtaking 72.7% grade, the Incline is a technical marvel and the steepest railway in the world.

Lookout Mountain

As you disembark at the top of Chattanooga’s Lookout Mountain, the top station’s observation deck provides amazing mountain views of Chattanooga Valley. Capture the beauty of the gorgeous vista views on camera. Those who wish can also explore the famed “Battle Above the Clouds,” fought in Chattanooga during the Civil War in the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, just several blocks from the Incline’s top station. The National Park’s Visitor Center, located by the park’s entrance, provides a fascinating history of the park, maps and other useful information about the surrounding area.
