Located in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, the Taubman Museum of Art began in 1947 as an offshoot of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, with an exhibition in Hotel Roanoke. Since, the Taubman Museum of Art has evolved into an institution for the benefit of the citizens of Virginia’s Blue Ridge.  Housed within an 81,000-square-foot building designed by Los Angeles, California architect Randall Stout, the museum inspires people to look at their world in new ways through art.

Taubman Museum of Art Collection

The Taubman Museum of Art’s permanent collection includes an estimated 2,155 pieces spanning from the 10-foot sculpture, Art World, by James Harold Jennings to the inch-and-a-half square photograph, Maggie on the Beach with Dog,  by Thomas Eakins, from 3,500-year-old Egyptian Ushabti ceramic figures to contemporary Roanoke art.

American Gallery

Included in the Taubman Museum of Art’s American collection are paintings such as Robert Henri’s Jimmie O’ Donnell, The Brown Bomber by Robert Riggs, Portrait of Mary and Elizabeth Macdowell by Susan Macdowell Eakins, Norman Rockwell’s Framed, Portrait of Walter S. Macdowell by Thomas Eakins and Portrait of Norah Gribble by John Singer Sargent. In addition holdings in this art gallery include the Tall Case Clock made of cherry, tulip poplar and yellow pine in the workshop of Peter Rife.

Contemporary Gallery

Included in the Contemporary Gallery are Southeast American Contemporary works of art. Notable pieces include Alice Robertson Near Her Front Door, a photograph by Stephanie Klein-Davis and Atlanta Gal, a hanging piece of mixed media by Petah Coyne. Works by John Cage and Bernard Butler can also be found in the Contemporary Gallery.

Mixed Bag Gallery

Works by Judith Leiber, a designer of luxury handbags, can be found in the Mixed Bag Gallery. Delight in unique bags decorated in rhinestones such as the Black Butterfly Clutch, Penguin Handbag, Personalized Roanoke Star Clutch, Cheetah-pattern Minaudiere and the Rose Box Handbag.

Regional Gallery

In the Regional Gallery paintings include Antoinette Hale’s Debutante, Ray Kass’ Wilson Creek Polyptych and Snake and Ladders by William Hamilton Rutherfoord. Also included in the Regional Gallery is Jessie’s Cut, a photograph by Sally Mann and Isabel, a bronze sculpture by Betty Branch.

Visionary Gallery

Modern works of art await you in the Visionary Gallery. See J.J Cromer’s colored pencil collage, The Secret Between Them, Purvis Young’s untitled piece made using oil, ink and acrylic and Howard Finster’s Elvis Had 94 Gold Songs, a piece of mixed art on plywood.

Folk Art Gallery

Included in the Folk Art Gallery are works by Georgia Blizzard, Fred Webster, Howard Finster, Richard Burnside, and Minnie and Garland Adkins. Delight in Fred Webster’s figurines entitled, Angel Choir, carved of wood and painted, or smoked-fired earthenware made by Georgia Blizzard.

Norah’s Café

Located in the Taubman Museum of Art is Norah’s Café. Enjoy wraps, paninis, sandwiches and salads. Norah’s Café also serves boxed lunches which include a wrap of your choice, potato chips, cookie and drink.

Travel Tips

-          Photography for personal use is allowed in the museum’s permanent collection galleries. The use of tripods, flash and artificial light is not allowed.

 

-          In addition to its permanent collections, the Taubman Museum of Art regularly features temporary exhibits.

 

-           Complimentary wheelchairs are available at the front desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
